Can It Get Any Better?

I stood back and stared at the Bentley, trying to take it all in. Visually, there was quite a lot for my mind to absorb and the first thing I thought was "How am I going to be able to write about this car" As time went on, I began to panic: it wasn‘t just the way the car looked; it was the driving experience, power, comfort, the way people stare and the feeling you get when you‘re walking towards the Continental Grand Tourer Convertible knowing that you‘re about to drive the very object that almost every other human being in visual range is staring at. I just kept thinking "I‘m driving an indescribably good car"

The visual impact of the Bentley GTC is breath-taking; it has a stunning presence. It is sublimely beautiful, yet powerful, even slightly menacing. Huge panels and tiny shut-lines combine to form a muscular body; sweeping feature-lines accentuate the potential, gracefully flared wheel-arches and subtly exaggerated rear haunches exude power. The mesh grille and huge 20 inch alloys fitted to the test car complete the image. This is a sensational looking vehicle; sitting in traffic, moving or parked, it always seems to be the main focal point of attention

I‘ve already reviewed the Continental Flying Spur, describing the big luxury cruiser as the “most complete car I‘ve ever driven”; the sort of accolade that I don‘t dole out every day. As you can imagine, I was prepared only for certainty that the GTC would be very, very good. On paper, this is a truly incredible car; it is powered by a 6-litre, 12-cylinder ’W‘ format engine fed by two turbochargers and it is capable of achieving 0-60 MPH in 4.8 seconds. Linked to an automatic/sequential paddle-shift gearbox, an awesome 552 BHP is transferred to all four wheels.

Can It Get Any Better?

The big luxury convertible was to be my main mode of transport for a weekend that the weather men said would be miserable. I was never so glad that the forecast was wrong; it was unseasonably bright and crisp and although it wasn‘t exactly balmy, the Bentley was capable of keeping me comfortably warm with the top down. With the heater on full blast and the heated seats doing a stirling job, I covered plenty of miles with the roof off. The interior was fully upholstered in stunning
red leather with chrome trim and contained too many comforts and details to list here.

Putting the GTC through it's paces, I was overawed by the way that the apparently infinite power was laid down, especially in ’Sport‘ mode. Open the throttle at rest and huge, sudden yet smoothly delivered force propels the car to 60 MPH in less time than it takes to say “national speed limit”. The performance dynamics aren‘t simply limited to straight-line drag, the fully adjustable air suspension complete with a complicated set of multiple linkages and advanced geometry ensures that the car
stays stable when you‘re taking bends at speed. An accurate transmission of power, controlled by an array of advanced drivers aids ensure that there are no nasty surprises should you underestimate the potential.

Ownership of a car like this is almost an abstract concept; the thought that this sort of comfort, power and status could be your dailytransp ort is almost surreal. The very idea that this unbelievable, almost indescribable car will transport you, protect you and obey you is mind-bending
– this is among the most desirable cars in the world, definitely in the top ten and probably very high on the same list.
